MAC 187 Duo Fibre Brush

11 March, 2011

Sassy beauty blogger and product junkie Danielle tells us about the must-have brush for applying liquid foundation…

There is something hugely compelling about Michelle Phan, an American makeup artist who has made a name for herself as one of the most-watched stars of YouTube. If you’ve seen any of her videos (and I have seen almost all of them, I sadly admit), you will notice that she recommends using a stippling brush to blend in liquid foundation. My curiosity piqued, I visited my nearest MAC counter to see if I could learn more and just how different the effect would be from a regular foundation brush.

Unsurprisingly, what started out as a fact-finding mission ended up a shopping excursion, and once I started using this brush my only regret was that it took me so long to discover its existence!

The duo fibre brush is just that – made up of shorter goat’s hair and longer synthetic bristles. The synthetic fibre deposits and spreads the foundation (much like your regular foundation brush) but here is where it packs an extra punch: the shorter, natural fibre then smooths the foundation over your skin. When used with a dabbing – not swirling – motion foundation is buffed and blended onto the skin, creating a far more natural look. The secret is in the stippling (imagine you’re pushing the foundation into your skin with the brush), which gives flawless finish. Needless to say, streaky marks are a thing of the past.

I’ve read reviews that the brush can also be used for applying cream blusher or even powder but in my opinion it was clearly made for liquid foundation so well worth investing in one if you want to realise the potential of your foundation. I might not be a makeup artist but I’m learning their secrets… thank you Michelle Phan!
