Les Suites Orient, Shanghai

We love a well-designed city hotel and few beat Les Suites Orient in Shanghai on the style stakes.

Just take a look at the views. Situated on the Bund, all of the rooms look out over the city or the Huangpu River. Shanghai was once known as The Paris of the East but given its spectacular rise of fortunes, it has clearly become a star to rival Paris in its own right.

A soothing palette of earth tones, Art Deco influences and a hint of the Orient combine to create a zentastic place of rest and relaxation. The bund studios overlook the famous Bund area with corner views, and despite being the smallest, are still a fairly generous 28m2 (300sq feet).

Parquet flooring, blocky furniture, fluffy beds and big bathrooms are the norm, as is complimentary wi-fi and breakfast served in Le Lounge (a nod to their French influence). We particularly love the snug lounge bar which blends 70s-esque chairs and tables with Oriental lamps and décor. Throughout the hotel, you’ll notice that retro old mixes with new.

Oversized windows are the most arresting feature of the rooms. Flooding the area with light, the rooms are the perfect retreat after a day spent exploring the chaotic city and service is helpful, cheery and pleasant without being intrusive or overbearing.

The hotel is opposite the Bund ferry terminal, which is just a short trip across the river to the miraculous Pudong and its towering skyscrapers.
