Holy Crepe! We try out galettes, crepes and more at O Delice!

1 August, 2014
Tucked away on the increasingly popular Landale Street in Wan Chai is O Delice!, a French café and restaurant that has a successful chain in Shanghai (see more Shanghai foodie recommendations here). This little resto is very understated, with simple, clean décor inside and a few tables to choose from.

This casual diner is not to be overlooked though, as it offers up a delectable selection of crepes, galettes, salads and more – all at very reasonable prices.

Simran and I were excited to try out O Delice! for lunch, especially as we both happen to be big waffle/crepe/galette fans! We were pleasantly surprised to find that there were other dishes on offer too, including pastas, soups, hot sandwiches (hello Croque Monsieur!) and substantial salads. To start, we had to try one of the buckwheat galettes, which you can even customise to suit what you’re in the mood for. For the ‘make your own’ galette, we chose sautéed mushrooms, sautéed spinach, mozzarella and egg, and the combination was delicious! The actual galette didn’t disappoint and was the perfect texture – not too thin and not too thick. These galettes are the ultimate comfort food and ideal for lunch if you want to grab something to fill you up.

As a lighter option, there’s also the salads. That being said, the salad we tried was pretty filling! The Guacamole Salad came with two slices of country bread smeared with the delicious avocado mixture we all know and love. The smoked salmon and roasted vegetables that accompanied the guac’ were good, though not remarkable, and despite being a tasty and hearty salad, I think I would still come here just for the galette!

We also couldn’t resist trying one of the signature pasta dishes, the Beef Bourguignon Fusilli with bacon, mushrooms and carrots in a red wine sauce. While this dish was tasty, it again didn’t quite have the same yummy, moreish factor as the galette. The beef was tender but I would definitely come back to O Delice! for the galettes over anything else, although it is good to know they offer more substantial meals if you’re looking for something at dinner time.

Lastly, we had to try one of the delicious sweet crepes. We chose the premium crepe with Pan-Fried Banana, Salted Caramel Butter and Vanilla Ice-cream… can you tell we love our desserts?! The caramel butter was positively addictive, and I’m warning you, it will be hard to share! We struggled with trying not to lick the plate clean, definitely one for those with a sweet-tooth.

Overall, O Delice! is a cute, casual French eatery that serves up delicious plates of unpretentious food. It’s simple and certainly isn’t going to break the bank, with galettes from $68-88 and crepes at a reasonable $32-62. The pastas are a little more, from $78-102, and with no service charge this place really is a bargain. They also serve up some great value sets too, with a nice brunch set on Saturday and Sunday that includes your choice of a galette or other go-to brunch meals (Eggs Benedict!), a coffee or tea and a fresh orange juice – with none of the sets over $158. Alternatively, the afternoon tea sets from Monday-Friday are great for coffee meetings where you can get a snack in too, and include a sweet crepe or waffle, or a savoury quiche or Croque Monsieur with a drink for $70 and less.

So, if you’re looking for a simple, cheap and cheerful lunch in a warm and welcoming atmosphere you should definitely try out O Delice!, especially if you work or live in Wan Chai (check out more cheap Wan Chai lunch options here)!
