For Your Diary: What’s On In Hong Kong For May

Is it spring? Is it summer? Whatever it is, we’ve hit Hong Kong’s famous wall of humidity which is so sticky, it’s making my hair stand on end (literally!). Everything’s coming up roses though, as there’s a whole host of indoor fun this month to enjoy – from theatre performances galore to foodie fun and more. If you want to get involved, mark these dates in your diary for May!

THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Doe, a deer, a female deer… yes, everyone’s favourite von Trapp family is in town, and we’re giving away tickets to this spectacular show! The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic is going to be staged at the Lyric Theatre, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, so enter our competition below for your chance to win tickets to the Thursday, 21 May showing!

THE SOUND OF MUSIC is always a crowd-pleaser, and this show does not disappoint! Showstopper! The Improvised Musical
This is improv comedy at its best… with music made up on the spot! Each night is different as the cast and crew take suggestions from the audience and wham, bam, thank you mam, put on a different musical each night. The more ridiculous the suggestion, the better… that’s exactly what’s fun about improv comedy!

Le French May
Francophiles will be pleased to know that May brings with it Le French May – a whole month dedicated to all things fabulous and French. It’ll showcase the best of French creativity, arts and culture including exhibitions, films and performances. Of course, foodies will be able to get in on the action too with Le French GourMay, Hong Kong’s French Food and Wine festival.

Jekyll & Hyde
If you love a good whodunit, then Jekyll & Hyde is definitely a theatre show to check out. This gothic masterpiece hits the stage in Hong Kong after successful runs in London and Edinburgh, and the gripping Robert Louis Stevenson tale will have you on the edge of your seat throughout!

Hong Kong Stories
Check out Hong Kong Stories at the Fringe Club. A group of people will share their autobiographical stories, and it will be somewhere between stand-up comedy and memoirs. Definitely one if you’re looking for a night of giggling away with the girls!

Dick Barton: Special Agent
Picture the scene: it’s post-war Britain, and the only thing people are entertained by is the radio and Dick Barton, special agent. He was the James Bond of his time. Check out the Hong Kong Players edition of this spoof theatre performance this month!

With Flying Colours
Ozone is celebrating its fourth anniversary (where did the time go?!) by throwing a slap-up party With Flying Colours. Chef Talks

The Urban Wellscape
The Oriental Spa and MAYYA + MOVEMENT are hosting an evening for urbanites to look and feel better. MAYYA + MOVEMENT is bringing their signature wellbeing programme to guests, members and the local community. Trichotomy Union in Art
Pintura Circle, in conjunction with the Philippine Consulate, is hosting Trichotomy Union in Art, an exhibition featuring sculptor Ram Mallari, acrylic painter Francis Nacion and oil painter Gerrico Blanco. Part of the proceeds will go to Anakatira, a charity organisation in the 852 which is also part of the Cebu City Task Force. They have a scholarship programme and a Sunday school for kids of all ages, particularly children living on the streets, teaching them to read, maths, arts, gardening and more.

Helter Skelter Live
If you’re feeling blue (see what I did there!), check out Blues band Helter Skelter at Fringe Club. The Hong Kong-based band plays a combo of original music and covers, and will lift anyone’s spirits on a gloomy day. See you there!

Justice
Grammy Award-winning French duo, Justice, are performing in Hong Kong and it’ll be a show you definitely don’t want to miss! The electronic and dance music group, made up of Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé, will be putting on a massive party at KITEC, so get your dancing shoes on, Sassy Girls!

The Print Market
If you’re looking to spruce up the walls of your inevitably tiny flat in the 852, head over to The Print Market, where you’ll find printed works and posters from nine of our favourite artists, designers and illustrators. Artists include Emily Eldridge, Charles Munka, Winnie Ng, Emilie Sarnel and more. Meet and greet them on Saturday, 16 May, but if you can’t make it then, the exhibition will continue until Wednesday, 27 May.

Affordable Art Fair
If you love art but can’t afford the steep price of a Damien Hirst (urgh, I’ve got my eye on this one… maybe for my dream home!) check out the Affordable Art Fair that’s hitting town again this month. There are loads of artists from Hong Kong and overseas exhibiting their work, so you’re bound to find something that reflects your own personal taste or splash out on a unique and thoughtful present for a special someone.

Drum Jam
Blow off some steam with Kumi Masunaga and the Drum Jam team. You’ll meet new people and learn the art of playing Japanese percussion instruments at this regular Fringe Club event. No need to bring your own pots and pans as drums will be provided, you only need to bring yourself!

Hidden Truffles Global Artisan’s Bazaar
Why not check out a shopping bazaar from Hidden Truffles? And if you’re feeling peckish, check out the bistro area which will be full of some of our favourite foodie vendors.

Lilly Singh
This Indian-Canadian YouTube sensation is hitting the stage in the ‘Kong this month! She’ll be performing as part of her A Trip to Unicorn Island world tour. This super sassy gal is already a comedy legend at age 26, and she’ll surely keep you entertained with her variety show. See you there!

Hong Kong Rum Fest 2015
If you’re in the mood for some cocktails, head over to one of our favourite tiki spots in town, Honi Honi, for Hong Kong’s annual Rum Fest. The weekend will feature more than 1,000 guests from around the world, as well as Nice Pops ice-pops and food from Pololi. There will be rum tastings, cocktail competitions and more. Enjoy!
