DAZ Hair – get a dazzling ‘do in Central

18 February, 2014

Heads up girls – there’s a new salon in town!

DAZ Hair is dazzling Asia with his cutting edge creations across the east – and they are definitely the cream of the crop (pun intended!). Following the success of The Hairdressers in Central and with 25 years experience under his belt, Aussie boy Darrin Usher was itching to put his creative talent to good use, opening DAZ Hair in both Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Floor

With the tagline “Not just another hairdressers”, Darrin’s latest conception is much more than your average salon. Hong Kong is famous for its old, nondescript high-rises that are filled with treasure troves behind closed doors… and DAZ Hair is one of those. A typical Hong Kong building with rickety lifts leading to an unimpressive passageway, the door opens and voila, you enter a rustic, earthy space that could easily double as a vintage lover’s hunting ground!

With its exposed brick walls and distressed wood, the décor is equally as authentic, with each station featuring unique chairs and exquisite vintage mirrors, which cast a flattering reflection with their gold flecked, slightly tinted glass. You’ll spy antique relics throughout the salon (some of which are for sale) including everything from vintage suitcases used as a rather dapper-looking coffee table, to old-style cameras, cutthroat razors and typewriters.

And as you sit back and get comfortable, you’ll notice that Darrin’s flair for design means he’s left no stone unturned in the salon décor. From the carefully chosen light-fittings to quirky water glasses and personalised coffee cups and sugar packets – even the bathrooms will have you spending an extra minute or two soaking up the chic ambience!

We all know how important it is to have a hairdresser that can do your ‘do, and I have to admit that as an expat it can be even tougher finding a salon that works for you. Add blonde hair into the equation and let’s just say that it’s a bit like finding a needle in a haystack!

But owner Darrin is more than just your average hair stylist; don’t be fooled by the tattoos, bleached Mohawk and metal accessories – this softie is as every bit as gracious as he is talented! Since my session at DAZ, I’ve often been asked where I get my hair cut and coloured – and I’m choosing to think that’s a good thing…
