City Kitchen: Taking On Trashy Takeaways!

25 July, 2011

The Hong Kong lifestyle means most of us dine out or eat takeaway dinner FAR too often. Apart from being hazardous to the waistline, takeout food often comes so long after you order it that you wolf down the whole lot in about thirty seconds and feel gross afterwards. Thankfully, there is a new and better option: City Kitchen! The great thing about City Kitchen (apart from the fact that your food arrives super-fast) is that they have a huge range of freshly prepared dishes and cuisines available. So if your buddies want Thai, but you’re craving a salad, you can still order from the same place.

I tried out the City Kitchen service last night with my husband and we decided to give their Indian menu a whirl. One of the things I miss most about living in the UK is decent Indian takeaway – in Hong Kong if you order curry, you’re likely to end up with a selection of boring, tasteless and greasy dishes in various generic sauces. I didn’t hold out a huge amount of hope for City Kitchen, but what can I say? I’m a born optimist! Thankfully we were pretty impressed. We tried out the Garlic Naan with Raita (delish), Chicken Tikka Masala (lovely and tomato-y and smokey tasting – definitely the star of the show), plus a Lamb Rogan Josh which had a great kick to it that sent me reaching for the water in surprise as I was expecting something bland. Best of all, 30 minutes after I had placed the order online, the delivery was at my door. To be fair, I only live in Wan Chai so it’s not the test it would be if I was Southside, but impressive nonetheless considering how the competition fare with a 10 minute drive!

With good veggie options, a selection of wine, beer and other beverages, and even a convenience store where you can order gum, Panadol and even Tampax, City Kitchen is a great one-stop-shop for an evening in. If you’re the indecisive sort (like me) it’s helpful to take a look at their Top 20 selection where you can see what other people are ordering most often. To place an order you just log onto their very user-friendly www.citykitchen.hk and once you’ve chosen your dishes you can order online or by calling 3111 2225.
