Bon Ton is a very cool little boutique hotel – each ‘room’ is a house that has been moved from elsewhere in Malaysia and rebuilt to create this mini village of sorts. If you’re an animal lover, you’ll also appreciate that the hotel is a charity that rescues and houses stray dogs and cats on the island – it really is a hotel with a heart of gold.
Take your pick from one of the eight unique houses, some of which are over 100 years old – Black Coral (above), Laguna (below) and Yellow Orchid are our favourites. In its previous life, Yellow Orchid was a fisherman’s house but has since been transformed into a colourful home with its own sundeck, balcony and private outdoor bath at the rear of the property. Yes, sounds a bit strange, but save judgement until you’ve taken a midnight soak with uninterrupted views of the star-filled sky… amazing!
What the hotel lacks in five-star fanciness, it more than makes up for in charm. Continental breakfast is placed in your fridge every night and includes a yummy selection of breads, jam, honey, fruit, yoghurt, homemade cake, juice and milk for you to enjoy while chilling on your porch, whatever time you like, in the morning.
Locals and expats alike love munching on the East-Meets-West fare at The Nam, one of Langkawi’s best kept secrets. You must try the tantalising tropical treats, including BBQ rock lobster tails with satay sauce and prawn and pineapple curry with basil and mint sauce. Mmmmm….
One of our favourite things to do in the evening is catch the last rays on the sunset deck overlooking the lagoon, nibbling on mezze with an icy cocktail in hand…definitely island living at its finest.
