Beauty Review: Rennie Fensham from Glow with Ceri Silk

15 November, 2011

UPDATE: Rennie has since moved to her own hair salon, Hollywood Hair – check out our review here! You can also find our our verdict on the skincare and body treatments at Glow with Ceri Silk in our review here.

Meeting Rennie Fensham, winner of this year’s Sassy Awards for favourite hair stylist in Hong Kong, is like a having a chat and gossip with a long lost girlfriend. When Rennie won the Award, we were intrigued to learn more: admittedly, we had not heard of Glow with Ceri Silk, but our enlightened readers clearly know a thing or two about beauty!

I headed to Glow to meet Rennie and get an up-do for a formal event. Hailing from South Africa, she is the Aunt I wish I had: from her bubbly personality down to her recently inked tattoo, I couldn’t help but think how cool it would be if we were related! We chatted easily about makeup and her lifelong passion for the beauty and hair industry, swapping details about our favourite lipsticks. In case you are wondering, her preferred shade is a punky, metallic red lippie by Kat Von D called Adora Painted Love.

In her own words: “Ceri Silk started Glow about 5 years ago. [Ceri] is taking care of the total transformation side of the beauty part of Glow and I joined her in May to add the hair and make up side to Glow. In short …we are two crazy women who are passionate about our work.”

I rarely place myself at the mercy of hair stylists. If you’ve read an earlier article about my hair history, you’ll understand why. However, there was something about Rennie’s practiced hands, the glow in her eyes when I showed her my evening gown that assured me that the lady had her own ideas. With 28 years’ experience in the world of beauty, fashion and TV fussing about my head, I relaxed into my seat and let Rennie work her magic. “Do whatever you think looks best on me,” I pronounced, a little surprised at my own laissez faire approach.

First, Rennie worked Fudge Salt Spray to the roots of my hair. She taught me a Hollywood trick: using a wide-toothed comb, she distributed the product evenly from root to tip; ensuring each strand of hair was coated with the texturising spray. She then dried and curled the back section of my hair, pinning bits of hair up, teasing other sections.

The piece de resistance was the front-side sections of hair that she twisted round and round, creating a modern yet classic effect. Somehow this also made my features look more lifted. I’ve tried to recreate this look since but suspect my finicky hair and clumsy fingers are not up to the task…particularly for an amateur!

I’ve had my hair styled in the past but nothing prepared me for the art that Rennie had sculpted with my fine, lank hair. I had so many compliments at the ball and felt a pang of sadness when I had to unpin my hair, eventually… But not before exhausting my camera battery with photos of my hair from every conceivable angle.

A well deserved Sassy award winner, I have the readers to thank for turning us on to this fab little salon and its equally fab stylist!
